Report day 8
Last Tuesday 28th of July, Lars (19) hit the road in the name of BuurtBij. This time, not with Robin – who normally is present – but with Erik (12), another very young nature enthusiast who is eager to discover and help us learn more about nature here in Amsterdam Noord.
This time I wrote the report in English, as Erik is from Budapest. He speaks a little Dutch but we mostly talk English together.
The area where Lars and Erik moved within was Noorderpark, in which the wild bee species Langkopsmaragdgroefbij lives [1]. The tree of the day was the plane tree (or plataan in Dutch). The species of the week – based on SoortSafari of tv program Klokhuis [2] – was the ekster.

Today, something very special happened. Lars: “Erik found a very very very rare species!”. He found the elm seed bug (iepenridderwants in Dutch). Lars: “It is very special that Erik found the species. It is officially not even classified as a species that is found in the Netherlands, because on average it’s not even found once a year here.”
The funny thing is, he found it in the small park that they visited yesterday with Martine, between the Meidoornweg and the Buiksloterweg. It’s super biodiverse, way more than they thought! Erik: “It was super difficult to spot it, it was in between a bark and moss, and it was super difficult to get a good picture. The last chance I had to take a picture before he crawled away was the perfect one, and we could identify the bug!”.
Lars and Erik also met Thijs de Zeeuw, de Natuur Optimist in the small park. He explains that he also likes to visit the park for its outstanding biodiversity and likes to take pictures of insects. However, he also explains how the park lost a lot of biodiversity over the years: “The management of the park has shifted often, so maintenance is really lacking.” But the park is really important: “The park is very wild. It really functions as a corridor: those are spaces of green that function as ‘highway’ for animals, nature that functions as transportation space from one side of the city to another.” Thijs explains. This week, Erik made use of the app Obsidentify, and found a crazy amount of species by truly diving into all the corners and looking under every stone. He found the following species (in Dutch):

Can you imagine the amount of species to be found in nature so close to us? Imagine how many you can find if you look carefully! How lucky we are with such a richness of neighbours around us.
